The function of Louvered fins

 

In heat exchangers, the fins themselves play a critical role. They provide the extended surface area needed to achieve effective heat transfer between a gas on the finside and a fluid on the tubeside.

Fins are typically made from aluminum, copper, or steel alloys. In order to increase the heat transfer effectiveness of the fins they can be configured in a variety of different shapes, known as enhancements.

 

The concept behind all fin enhancements is to improve heat transfer performance via air turbulence and increased surface area, but they all differ in efficacy with regard to a few important considerations.

When weighing fin enhancements, it may be helpful to think of them as part of a spectrum. Like many of the rules of physics, there are tradeoffs, so we’ve developed an array of these enhancements.

Common louvered fins 

 

Common louvered fins have a common orientation of notches that are designed to raise air turbidity unidirectionally. Increasing the severity of the louver angles improves heat transmission efficacy up to a point, after which the effectiveness begins to decline.
The directional nature of louvered fins is an intriguing feature to be aware of. The orientations of the louvers must be accounted for, since poor directionality will steal performance rather than boost it, similar to shark skin, where touch in one direction is smooth and contact in the opposite direction is coarse and harsh.
